Kariba one of Zimbabwe's premier tourist destinations

The resort is famous for its wildlife and exceptional fishing. Tigerfish are the internationally recognized game fish found in Lake Kariba. The fish was officially recognized by the International Game Fishing Association, resulting in the presence of an annual world tournament held on Lake Kariba in October.
Breams and Vundu catfish are popular in Kariba too, and other species include Eeel, Squeaker, Chesa, Barbel, Bottlenose, and Nkupe.
In 1967, huge shores of Kapenta (Matemba) were airlifted to Kariba from Lake Tanganyika in Malawi and today form the basis of a thriving commercial fishing industry.
There are a number of islands on Lake Kariba, and these include Antelope,
Forthergill, Spurwing, Chete, Chikanka, Msambakaruma, Tsetse, Daisy, Rhino, Snake, and Bad
The wildlife seen now were rescued from the flooding water during the creation and expansion of Lake Kariba. Operation Noah was the rescue operation that was led by Rupert Fothergill, who was Rhodesia's Chief Game Ranger from 1958 to 1964. About 6000 animals were rescued, and the majority of these animals were relocated to Matusadonha Game Park.
The St. Barbra Church was built in memory of the 86 Africans and Italians plus 17 others (including the 11 mentioned above) who remain embedded in the dam wall, dear ones who lost their lives during Kariba Dam wall construction. Inside the church is a plaque with the names of people who died during construction.
