Umfurudzi Park covers an area of 76000 ha of nature and bio-diversity. The Park was formed in 1981 and is the first Park to be formed under post independent Zimbabwe. The Park was officially opened by former President, R.G Mugabe in 1981.
In store to your visit are great archeological sites dating back to early settlement in Zimbabwe as bushman paintings are available for all to notice throughout the park. Umfurudzi has some very unique species. The Park had, in the early 1990s, black Rhino, it is the goal of Umfurudzi Park within 5 years to reintroduce this species. As such you are guaranteed to meet 3 of the Big Five!
Activities
Umfurudzi Park is safe to walk anywhere outside of the protected and fenced buffalo breeding area. There are many marked trails and roads within the Park to walk. With special arrangements, multi day walking and wilderness camping in the park is available to the seasoned hiker. A climb at Mt Chisinga, Svisamoyo and other mountains or granite kopje's and Dwalas in the park is also a well recommended days' outing to make your experience special.
*Walking within the intensive breeding area is allowed with the attendance of a Park Ranger. The area contains dangerous animals namely Buffalo and Elephant.
Umfurudzi is blessed with fantastic fishing. The park has a number of rivers which flow all year.The Mazoe River is on the eastern boundary and host to a varied collection of fish namely;
Tiger fish, Bream Species, Bottle Nose, Barble, Vundu, Labeo and is the only river system in Zimbabawe to hold Yellow fish.
*Umfurudzi River flows into the Mazowe, the same species of fish can be caught in pools within the umfurudzi all year round.
Tip! Bring your fly rod and wander up the rivers, there are some beautiful sites to see and fish to catch.
