1. Madora: If you find yourself staying at a lodge or hotel that does not serve madora as part of their snacks or relish, make a special request because a trip to Zimbabwe would be incomplete without these unique mopane worms.

2. Kapenta/Matemba: This is served as a snack in the majority of Mashonaland West hotels. Matemba is fished from Lake Kariba and the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, and Kapenta was imported from Lake Tanganyika between 1966 and 1967.Normally, kapenta is part of a snack for activities like boat cruising and other water sports. The food is either cooked fresh or dried, and fresh kapenta has a different taste from dried ones. Many people tend to love both, especially the smallest kapenta group.

3. Maheu: Maheu is a traditional drink made from maize meal, sorghum, sugar, milk solids, and lactic acid, preserved with potassium sorbate and natamycin. Homemade maheu is made either from leftovers of sadza, water, and sorghum malt (powdered) or with porridge, water, and sorghum malt. National breweries in Zimbabwe also make Maheu and sell it to local supermarkets and restaurants.

4. Muboora with dovi (pumpkin leaves and peanut butter): This is one of the tastiest traditional dishes, which is used as a relish for the staple food in Zimbabwe. The dish is seasonal.

5. Beef stew mixed with green leaves, also known as "Highfields": One should not miss this yummy dish, which is common among Zimbabweans and is also sold in supermarkets.

6. Nhopi: This is more like pumpkin porridge mixed with different ingredients.

A memorable place to stay:

We, a female couple, traveled around Zimbabwe for three weeks in November 2017, and our stay at Big Cave Camp was a definite highlight. We stayed here for two and a half days, and an extra day or two would have been lovely. The place is quite small, and breakfast, as well as a set menu for lunch and dinner, are taken family-style with the other guests, the delightful manager, Lin, and the on-site guide, Shepherd. The food was amazing here, which is a big plus since the place is secluded and there’s nowhere else to go.

Both the common areas and the rooms are very tastefully laid out. It was wonderful simply to hang out and just enjoy the extraordinary surroundings. The place is situated in a huge, private park bordering the national park with lots of birds and animals like zebras, wildebeest, hyraxes, lizards, monkeys, and leopards. The Internet was very expensive and very slow, so we decided to go offline and take in the splendid view from our balcony and our various tours with Shepherd instead. He is extremely knowledgable, particularly when it comes to birds, and we can definitely recommend his guided walks and sunset tour. He knows the area so well.

The area itself is stunning, with impressive rock formations, and it’s a delight to be able to walk around the area and take in the scenery without fear of wild animals. We wholeheartedly recommend this place to nature lovers and bird lovers alike.

Khami ruins are the capital of the Torwa seeking dynasty which rose as a result of the demise of the Great Zimbabwe Kingdom .It is composed of dry-stone walled structures  which historians regard as an epitome of evolving stone age culture. It is the second largest stone build monument in Zimbabwe – after the Great Zimbabwe of course .

The ruins are managed by National Museums and Monuments which serves as the responsible agency for the maintenance of this property .Government of Zimbabwe partly funds into conservation work through its Public Sector Investment Programme.(PSIP) . Curious ? Pay a visit!

The lost ruins lie 135 kilometers from Bulawayo , in Shangani with a proximity to Gweru. Just like the Khami ruins , the architecture of Dhlodhlo or Danangamombe is accredited to the Torwa Dynasty  which was erected after  Khami was annihilated .

The main building is made up of two large platforms covering a distance of more than 900 square metres and 2800 metres.

How to get there ?

As you approach Shangani township from Bulawayo , there will be a  banner directing you to turn right onto a dust road,  Follow the off road course for the next 10 kilometres which will lead you to another sign written Dhlodhlo Ruins and tasking you to turn right again. Continue for another 20kilometees until you reach another sign on the left written Dhlodhlo Ruins .

Great Zimbabwe is a medieval city in the Southern-eastern hills of Zimbabwe near Lake Mutirikwi and the town of Masvingo. The structure is said to have been erected by the ancestral Shona and it served as a political hub as well as a large and wealthy global trading network. Archeologists have found various artifacts including pottery from China and Persia and Arab coins, makes you wonder what other treasures this place harbors. The archaeological site at Great Zimbabwe has a sum of 3 sections, the first one being the Hill Complex which is structured with ruins that sit atop the steepest Hill of the site, it is this place where all the religious activities were conducted.

The second section is by far the most intriguing, The Great Enclosure, a circular area below the Hill Complex whose walls are a high as a kite built with no mortar relying only on carefully shaped rocks to hold the walls shape on their own, talk about precision! The Jacaranda tree is native of South America. It towers a magnificent 20 – 30 meters in height and its flowers produced in large panicles. Each flower with five lobed blue to purple-blue corolla.

Several of its species are used as ornamental plants  with a core value of intense flower displays. The genus thrives is full sun and sandy soils, explaining its dominance in the city of Harare. Younger  plants are not known to survive in colder climates when temperatures drop below freezing. The trees are also found in Tanzania , Kenya to mention but a few.

With beautiful walks through manicured gardens, winding through a collection of avian species ,all housed in aviaries replicating their natural habitat, this is a paradise for all nature-lovers.

Granite mangosteen is an attractive evergreen tree with greenish yellow flowers and fleshy edible fruits. Their aim is to introduce people to the love of swimming through teaching water safety as well as swimming competence.

Who can learn ?

Basically everyone and anyone from as young as 6months to over 70 years old.

Lessons are done by either individuals or groups of not more than 5 depending on how hectic the schedule may be ,or the availability of coaches. Also taught are adults with a fitness program for those who already swim.

Lake Kariba, built by damming the Zambezi River, is the largest man-made lake in the world. Many fish species, including Bream, Catfish, Eel, Bottlenose, Cornish Jack, Chessa, Nkupe, Squeaker, and the famous Tigerfish, are found in the lake. A fleet of fishing boats is ready to take you out to catch some extremely big fish, and the club is also going to clean and pack all your catches so that you can take them back later with you.

MASTER THE ART OF GRILLING

Haka Park is situated just off Mutare Road past the Harare Drive roundabout right next to the entrance to the Cleveland Dam and is privately run and in very good condition. There are a variety of roofed braai spots, with benches and proper braai spots in different spots in the park, all in excellent condition. So you can be schooled on how to braai with your friends there and impress those in-laws of yours at your next braai. Thank me later! They're very private and secluded, and they sit amid some giant, massive rocks that Harare is so famous for. If you are in for a little more adventure you can try their horse riding and canoeing facilities.

CLIFF DIVING

I am sure a few of you have heard of Mutorashanga (a place located in Gweru) and it’s still on your bucket list. For those with acrophobia (fear of heights), I wouldn’t recommend this but the jump ranges from 5-10m, absolutely exhilarating. It has great reviews and a thumbs up from me. Look it up, what you see is what you get.

HIKING

My dear brothers, uncles, and fathers hiking is healthy for you. Getting outside for even a short hike regularly can reduce your risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and cholesterol and help to prevent type II diabetes.  Chimanimani mountain is a great destination for you and the guys to go hiking. It is a great weekend getaway for you and the guys.

1.       FEELING AMBER

What we are trying to do here is to turn that sad face into a smile. So if you are feeling unhappy I would suggest going to someplace that makes you happy. My suggestion would be to visit any place with art. When you see the weird and yet beautiful pieces that people make, it’s bound to make you laugh a little. You can take a tour around the National Art Gallery. From a personal point of view, every time I visit the gallery I bump into so many thought-provoking pieces, from poetry, paintings to sculptures. Alternatively you can visit the Chapungu Sculpture Park in Msasa. I’m sure a few things will get your mind off things and put a smile on your face.

2.       FEELING GREEN

This mood is something we would like to maintain, so we are not going to try and turn that calm into a storm. So we are going green but not too much. Mana Pools is a perfect place to enjoy intimate encounters with wildlife, in part due to its remote nature. It helps you to go out on a walking safari, one of the aspects that makes this national park so special. Although for others, this can sound slightly dangerous, the feeling of adventure available is irresistible. Keep that cool, cheetahs don’t like attitude!

3.       FEELING BLUE

I am so tempted to talk of Chinhoyi caves right now, and I will! because of its crystal blue water. Feeling blue? Let’s match your mood with the colour of the place. The caves are made up of a network of tubes that lead you down to the main cave on a descent that is breath-taking in its aqua-coloured seawater. This pool is known as the Sleeping Pool and among divers, who have gone as deep as 50 m and the visibility is still amazingly fine, it has become very famous.

4.       FEELING VIOLET

5.       FEELING BLACK/ GRAY

Everyday hustles can get you feeling strained, tense and a little bit anxious. This weekend let’s try to get that tension off. This granite hill on the outskirts of Harare is a great place to go for sun-downers, also known as Domboshava, literally translated as 'The Red Rock'. It's a simple-ish walk to the top, and it's not too impossible to take a picnic basket! There's a nominal admission fee that can be paid to one of the officials in uniform near the car park on arrival. If you are looking to go somewhere 2/3 hours away then Nyanga is for. The trip is worthwhile.

It’s not so a heavy ask to go where your mood takes you. Blend in take a sip and enjoy. Life is too short!

Hwange National Park-Hwange National Park is the largest and oldest of Zimbabwe's game reserves, and it is situated to the west of the nation on the border with Botswana.With a large area of around 5,655 square miles (14,650 square kilometers), it offers a haven for more than 100 animal species, including the Big Five.

Victoria Falls-The Zambezi River forms Zimbabwe's westernmost boundary with Zambia.It drops from a precipice at Victoria Falls that is 3,54 feet (108 meters) high and 5,604 feet (1,708 meters) wide.One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, this is the planet's biggest sheet of falling water.

Lake Kariba-The Zambezi River empties into Lake Kariba, another magnificent body of water situated on the Zambian border, to the northeast of Victoria Falls.Lake Kariba, which was built in 1959 with the completion of the Kariba Dam, is the largest artificial lake in the world in terms of volume.At its broadest point, it is over 25 miles (40 kilometers) across and well over 140 miles (220 kilometers).

4. Mana Pools-Mana Pools National Park, one of Zimbabwe's most pristine natural places, is situated in the country's far north.Its extraordinary concentrations of species, including elephants, buffalo, leopards, and cheetahs, have earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.A sanctuary for aquatic animals, Mana Pools is home to sizable populations of hippo and Nile crocodile.

5. Bulawayo-Visit Bulawayo, the second-largest city in Zimbabwe, if you're yearning for metropolitan culture (after the capital, Harare).The city, which was founded in the middle of the 19th century by the Ndebele monarch, Lobhengula, was governed by the British South Africa Company during the Matebele War.Because of this, most of the city's current architecture has colonial influences, and strolling through its broad, jacaranda-lined streets is like traveling back in time.

6. Great Zimbabwe National Monument-The most significant stone ruins south of the Sahara are preserved at the site, together with the remnants of Great Zimbabwe, the ancient Kingdom of Zimbabwe's capital.The remains, which were constructed between the 11th and 15th centuries, are spread out across a large area and include a hilltop acropolis where monarchs and chieftains once resided.

7.Matobo National Park-About 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Bulawayo, is where you'll find Matobo National Park.In the indigenous Ndebele language, the name of the park is "Bald Heads," alluding to the intriguing granite rock formations that dot the landscape.Many of these boulders are marked with ancient rock art that the San bushmen produced some 2,000 years ago, and some of them are incredibly balanced on top of one another.

8.Chimanimani National Park is a mountainous area on the country's eastern border with Mozambique.
The park, which is characterized by deep gorges, verdant valleys, and towering hills, is the ideal location for anyone who wants to hike, camp, and get lost in Zimbabwe's wilderness.The tallest peaks are above 7,990 feet (2,400 meters) high.As a result of the park's lower parts being covered in dense virgin forest, elusive animals like eland, sable, and blue duiker antelope can find refuge there.

9.Mutare, Zimbabwe's fourth-largest city and also in the country's far east, is known for its laid-back vibe that is influenced by its picturesque highland backdrop.It is renowned for its quaint guesthouses and B&Bs, notably the well-liked Ann Bruce Backpackers, which offers affordable lodging.For fans of transportation, the historic Mutare Museum is a must-see. It has a noteworthy collection of vintage automobiles, motorcycles, and steam engines.For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Bvumba Botanical Reserve offers stunning views and trails where you may spot uncommon animals like the Swynnerton's Robin and the unique Samango monkey.

10. The Chinhoyi Caves, in Zimbabwe's north-central region, are a mystery.The Chinhoyi Caves National Park protects this underground network of caverns and tunnels made of limestone and dolomite.They may have been inhabited since at least the first century, according to pottery and human remains found here.Most notably, they gave Mashona chief Chinhoyi and his people safety from raiding tribes.

In Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, along Leopold Takawira Road, the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe is located. The museum includes exhibits that highlight Zimbabwe's history, mineral wealth, and nature, including the world's second-largest mounted elephant. Awesome things! It is one of the nation's five national museums and Zimbabwe's only natural history museum. The museum has nine public show galleries, a 120-seat lecture hall, a cafeteria, and eight research departments with extensive collections of studies and ongoing research in the following disciplines: arachnology and invertebrates, entomology, ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology, ichthyology, paleontology, and geology and archaeology.

KHAMI RUINS

If you take a trip to Bulawayo you might as well check out the Khami Ruins. Khami is a ruined city situated in Zimbabwe, 22 kilometers west of Bulawayo. It was once the capital of the Torwa dynasty's the Kalanga Kingdom of Butwa. It is now a national park, and in 1986 it became a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and who are you not to visit if it’s considered a world heritage site by UNESCO.

RAILWAY MUSEUM

By the looks of it, it seems as if you Bulawayo has a whole history to tell. The Bulawayo Railway Museum is a railway museum that houses many exhibits on the history of the railway system in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, located at Bulawayo Railway Station in Zimbabwe. Its oldest exhibits date back to 1897 and include the personal railway coach of Cecil Rhodes. The museum is owned by Zimbabwe's National Railways. Some steam locomotives from the museum have, in the past, been refurbished and returned to service because of the severe shortage of rolling stock.

NATIONAL HEROES ACRE

A trip to National Heroes Acre may make your kids consider being a hero and buried in such a cool place. National Heroes Acre, or simply Heroes Acre, in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a burial ground and national monument. Situated on a ridge seven kilometers from Harare, towards Norton, the 57-acre site is found. It’s claimed aim is to honor guerrillas killed in the Rhodesian Bush War by the Patriotic Front and contemporary Zimbabweans whose commitment or commitment to their country justifies their burial in the shrine. I visited this place when I was a kid and it was a beautiful and exciting experience for me. The view of Harare is beautiful from the high point of this place.

GREAT ZIMBABWE

A great place to have an appreciation of this country’s history is Great Zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe near Lake Mutirikwe and the town of Masvingo. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country's Late Iron Age. It is believed that Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the local monarch. It would, as such, be used as the seat of political power. The walls, some of which were over five meters high, were among the most prominent features of the edifice. Without mortar, they were made. The city was finally abandoned and fell into ruin. Visiting this place will leave you with so much appreciation.

MUTARE MUSEUM

Mutare Museum is a museum in Mutare, Zimbabwe. It is one of the four national museums of Zimbabwe and was initially established as a society in 1954 before becoming a national museum in 1959. The Mutare Museum continues to be accommodating, as well as entertaining and educational, despite being plagued by decades of underfunding. The displays, especially the Transport Gallery and the Boultbee Gallery, may be old and a bit tired, but they still feature high-quality exhibits. There is plenty of material for the general visitor looking for background information on Manicaland, for example, the show of weapons is recognized as one of the best in Africa, and the transport exhibits are excellent. A visit to this great museum is certainly recommended.

The National Botanical Garden of Zimbabwe is located in the suburb of Alexandra Park, in Harare which is approximately 4 km north of Harare City Centre. It also houses Zimbabwe's National Herbarium. The gardens are nearly 7 square kilometres in size. Initially, it was built in 1902 as a leisure area. In 1962, under the direction of Prof. Hiram Wild, it became the National Botanical Gardens. Half of the gardens are dedicated to indigenous plants from the woodlands of Zimbabwe and include most of the country's 750 species. Other areas include plants typical of the African continent, including rare and endangered species, as well as South American, Indian, Australian and Far East exotics. This is a pleasant place to visit for those interested in plants or forest environments in Zimbabwe. It's a perfect place for your kids to run around, have a light meal at the restaurant, and the various forest ecosystems in general.

BALLY VAUGHAN AND MWANGA LODGE

There is a game park on the property neighbouring Mwanga Lodge and it provides lodging, elephant rides, canoeing, game drives, and walks. You can do a day safari that includes an animal sanctuary tour, morning tea, an elephant ride, a canoe trip, lunch, and a game drive. You can view lions, hyenas, monkeys at very reasonable prices at the Bally Vaughan Animal Sanctuary too. It’s just located 40 km from Harare off the Shamva Rd.

BUSHMAN ROCKS SAFARIS AND WINERY

Another place located 40 km out of Harare, off the Mutare Road is this boutique winery that has an interesting package. A restaurant, game park, fishing field, canoeing, rock art, horse riding, accommodation, and polo grounds are also included in this "boutique winery," all set around a dam in the serene Nyamasanga River Valley. In the thatched lodges which overlook the lakes and valley, accommodation is available. Pre-booking is crucial for any visit so pick up the phone and book an appointment!

Zumbani

Known as Lippia javanica , the above is  resilient in the battling of fever and colds .Grown between March and May annually , the Zumbani plant was well known during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic to have had helped a majority if the locals with its anti inflammatory properties. Its dried leaves can also be used to make herbal tea.

Eryngium

This is a collective name given to a plant containing over 200 various species. Also used as a folk medicine in turkey -its primary impact reduces blood sugar levels. Erygium contains a plethora of terpenoids, saponins ,flavonoids and steroids .Apart from its availability to yield essential oil, Eryngium is highly sought after throughout the world.

As the wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes lope around you. Feel at the edge and relish the element of excitement in Hwange, Victoria Falls, Snake Park -to mention but a few.

Last Last! Be sure to try the local Zimbabwean delicacies (this tip is not limited to the confines of Zimbabwe – regardless of the country you visit). Most culinary tours include shopping for ingredients at local markets, studying local recipes, and mastering techniques, and, of course, a reasonable amount of wine sampling and dining in fine restaurants. This is a one-of-a-kind slender , shrubby perennial herb that stretches up to 1.5m in height.it I colored in pale yellow on the inside with a often reddish brown on the outside. Also similar to the Gomphocarcus stenophyllus from Kenya and Tanzania the tenuifolius is only found in Zimbabwe and only found in granite kopjes on watershed plateaus.

Portulaca rhodesiana

Colored in bright pink , the herb is yet another rare gem you can only find in Zimbabwe .Thriving in thin soil on granite domes,  the rhodesiana is only available from  the central watershed of Zimbabwe from Matobo to Harare on the eastern parts of Juliasdale.

English Name Fire Bush

It is a shrub or small tree that stretches up to 6m it is famously known for its bright red  show that resembles autumn leaves. In addition , the fire bush is also found throughout tropical Africa (Guinea to Ethiopia) and the southern parts  of Zimbabwe making it somewhat of a rare find.

Mutarazi falls is known as the place where fear is conquered. Located in the eastern highlands of Nyanga is one of the natural wonders of Zimbabwe. A drive through the thick forest to Mutarazi shows that the area is still undisturbed and harbors a lot of secrets. Hwange National Park

Hwange national park offers a wide range of activities from animal to nature walks.
