Robins Camp

Robins Camp, now under private new management, offers an exciting revival of the iconic safari destination in Hwange National Park. Robins Camp is situated in the rugged northern Basalt area of the park, an area rich in natural water with seeps and springs dotting the area. It is the home to some of the last great buffalo herds in Africa, with herds of over 2000 still seen. Given the abundance of prey animals, it is no wonder that it also has the highest concentration of lion in the Park. Robins is also known for big populations of reedbuck, roan, sable and tsessebe as well as the usual herds of elephants and other species encountered in the Park. Particularly encouraging are the regular sightings of both Cheetah and African Wild Dog.

Great Zimbabwe
+263 (024) 2774208 natmus@nmmz.co.zw

Great Zimbabwe is a medieval city in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe near Lake Mutirikwi and the town of Masvingo. It is thought to have been the capital of a great kingdom during the country's Late Iron Age about which little is known.[1] Construction on the city began in the 9th century and continued until it was abandoned in the 15th century.[2][3] The edifices are believed to have been erected by the ancestral Shona.[4] The stone city spans an area of 7.22 square kilometres (2.79 square miles) and could have housed up to 18,000 people at its peak, giving it a population density of approximately 2,500 per square kilometre. It is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Lake Mutirikwi
+263(0)39 629 13 / +263(0)4 706 077 info@zimparks.co.zw

Lake Mutirikwi, formerly known as Lake Kyle or Kyle Dam, lies in south eastern Zimbabwe, south east of Masvingo. It is thought to have been named Lake Kyle, from the Kyle farm which occupied most of the land required for the lake, which in turn was named after the Kyle district in Scotland from which the pioneer of the Lowveld, Tom Murray MacDougall came originally. The lake covers about 90 km² (35 sq mi) and was created in 1960 with the construction of the Kyle Dam on the Mutirikwi River. The dam was built by Concor to provide water to the farming estates on the lowveld to the southwest, around the town of Triangle, where the main crop has been sugar cane.

Matopo National Park
+263 4 707 6249 reservationsbyo@zimparks.org.zw

Matobo National Park forms the core of the Matobo or Matopos Hills, an area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys commencing some 35 kilometres south of Bulawayo, Southern Zimbabwe. The hills were formed over 2 billion years ago with granite being forced to the surface, this has eroded to produce smooth "whaleback dwalas" and broken kopjes, strewn with boulders and interspersed with thickets of vegetation. Matopo/Matob was named by the Lozwi, who are the ancestors of Kalanga. A different tradition states that the first King , Mzilikazi Khumalo when told by the local residents that the great granite domes were called madombo he replied , possible half jest, "We will call them matobo" - an IsiNdebele play on 'Bald heads'

Camp Silwane
0774777710 enquiries@campsilwane.org

There are no fences between Hwange National Park and the surrounding areas with animals having the freedom to roam between the two. Unfortunately this freedom can lead to animals being hunted as was the case recently with the dominant male lion in the area, Mopane, being hunted in August 2021. His previous coalition partner, Sidule was also killed by trophy hunters on 10th August 2019 (ironically World Lion Day). This killing followed that of the famous lion Cecil by a bow hunter in 2015 which created an international outcry. The area has according to researchers, always received high hunting quotas and it is estimated that possibly half of all lions hunted in the greater Gwayi safari area are killed in this location. The killing of dominant lions has an immediate impact on prides left unprotected from other male lions moving into the area and wishing to take over the pride. Cubs are often killed in this circumstance. The pride may move away into the surrounding communal lands to avoid this situation which will inevitably lead to human-wildlife conflict. The hunting is not limited to lions but includes all other wildlife such as leopard, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, sable and other game.
