Chirinda Forest and the big tree

Manicaland province in Chipinge close to the Mozambican border stands the strange Chirinda Forest on the slopes of Mount Silinda.

Covering about 950 hectares the Forest is one of the protected forests in the country,it has a unique combination of tropical and subtropical vegetation.

The chief trees of this forest are the three great Red,Brown and White Mahogany trees.

The Big tree of Chirinda Forest is a Red Mahogany tree,it was first measured in 1920 and it was over 64 metres high,sadly over the years some of it's upper branched have fallen off and now it stands at 54 metres high.

The big tree blooms in November and has small white flowers.
