Award Winners ; Zimbabwe's Prestigious Trees
Zimbabwe, a southern African country well known for its abundant natural resources has host to some of the most diverse tree collections. Here are some of the trees awarded the prestigious tree of the year acknowledgement from the Forestry Commission.
English: Jackal-berry / swamp ebony/ African Ebony
Shona: Musuma, Mushuma
Ndebele: Umdlauzo/Umsuma
The name can be translated to mean ‘divine pear’ and can reach 45-50 meters in height. Its fruit is used in fermented drink or dried and stored. It can also be made into a porridge or an additional to mealie meal. Also known to boost nutrition, the fruit can be dried into a flour and often used to brew beer.
English: Granite garcinia/Granite mangosteen
Shona: Mutunduru

Granite mangosteen is an attractive evergreen tree with greenish yellow flowers and fleshy edible fruits. An infusion of its bark is believed to be a good antiseptic for wounds, culturally believed to treat venereal sores and widely used as an anti-diarrheal remedy. Also high in vitamin C content the tree is also used to brew traditional beverages.
